AstraZeneca PLC and Daiichi Sankyo said their drug Datroway significantly improved survival for patients with an aggressive form of breast cancer in a late-stage study.

The Phase III trial showed the therapy extended both overall survival and the time patients lived without their disease worsening when compared to standard chemotherapy, the companies announced Monday.

The study focused on patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer, a hard-to-treat variant, who were not eligible for immunotherapy.

According to the companies, chemotherapy is the current standard of care for this patient group, which represents about 70% of those with this type of advanced cancer.

"TROPION-Breast02 is the only trial ever to show an overall survival benefit in the first-line treatment of patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer for whom immunotherapy is not an option," said Susan Galbraith, AstraZeneca's Executive Vice President of Oncology R&D.

The companies stated that Datroway is the first therapy to demonstrate such a benefit against chemotherapy in this population.

The safety profile of the drug was consistent with previous trials, and the full results will be shared with global regulators.
