Centrica is extending the operational life of two UK nuclear power stations in which it holds a stake, the latest in a series of major investments aimed at bolstering Britain's energy infrastructure.

The company said Tuesday that the Heysham 1 and Hartlepool power stations, in which it has a 20% share, are now expected to generate electricity until March 2028, a year longer than previously planned.

According to the company, the extension will add approximately 3 terawatt-hours to its electricity generation volumes and follows positive results from inspections of the stations' graphite cores.

The move comes after Centrica committed 1.3 billion British Pounds for a 15% stake in the new Sizewell C nuclear plant in July and partnered in August to acquire the Isle of Grain liquefied natural gas terminal for an enterprise value of 1.5 billion British Pounds.

"The UK needs more reliable, affordable, zero-carbon electricity, so the extension of Heysham 1 and Hartlepool is great news," said Chris O'Shea, Chief Executive of Centrica.

He added that the company's recent investments underscore its commitment to securing the UK's energy future.
