Sweco wins major contract for Munich rail expansion

Sweco AB has won a multi-year contract from Germany's national railway, Deutsche Bahn, to oversee a major expansion of Munich's commuter rail system, the company said Wednesday.

The contract, which begins in May 2025, will run for about 4.5 years and includes an option for a five-year extension, according to the announcement.

The project aims to double the capacity of the city's 'S-Bahn' network by adding a second line, constructing a new tunnel under the city center, and upgrading stations.

Munich's S-Bahn currently serves over 800,000 passengers daily, well above its original design for 250,000 users, the company stated.

As part of a consortium, Sweco will provide construction supervision, with approximately 60 of its experts involved daily.

"Sweco has undertaken several projects for Deutsche Bahn in the past, and we have a strong, long-standing relationship," said Julia Zantke, Business Area President for Sweco in Germany, adding the company is "proud to have been selected to advise Deutsche Bahn on this project, which is of vital importance for Munich and the entire Bavarian region."

The Stockholm-based engineering consultancy reported sales of approximately 2.7 billion Euros in 2024.
