Swedish defense company Saab AB said Monday it has acquired Deform AB, a domestic supplier of specialty parts for its submarine division.

The acquisition is intended to secure the supply chain for Saab's Kockums business unit, which is currently producing the new Blekinge-class submarines for the Swedish navy, the company said.

Saab acquired the submarine manufacturer Kockums from Germany's ThyssenKrupp in 2014, and this latest deal represents a further step in securing its production capabilities.

Deform, which has 37 employees, specializes in forming tough metallic materials.

"Deform has a unique expertise in the shaping of tough and demanding materials," said Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s business area Kockums.

"We see it as a winning solution for both Kockums and Deform to secure the supply chain and jointly develop more businesses by making Deform part of the Saab family."

Deform will continue to operate under its own name from its current location in Degerfors, Sweden, according to the announcement.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
