Danish cable maker NKT A/S has been selected as the preferred bidder for a major power cable project connecting Scotland and England, a significant win that comes as the company faces antitrust scrutiny in Eastern Europe.

A joint venture between SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission chose NKT to supply the high-voltage direct current cable system for the Eastern Green Link 3 interconnector, the company said Monday.

The project involves approximately 680 kilometers of on- and offshore cables designed to link the two countries' power grids as part of a broader UK initiative to upgrade its electricity network for clean energy.

"We are honoured to be selected as the preferred bidder for EGL3, a key project in the upgrade and decarbonisation of Great Britain’s power system," NKT President and CEO Claes Westerlind said.

The deal was announced weeks after NKT confirmed its Czech subsidiary is under investigation by Slovakia's antimonopoly office for alleged anti-competitive practices.

NKT said the parties are now negotiating a firm contract for the project.

This follows another major contract win for NKT earlier this month to connect Denmark's planned Bornholm Energy Island to the mainland.
