Sweco AB has won a multi-year contract from Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway, for a major rail expansion in Munich, the company announced Wednesday.
The contract, starting May 2025, will run for approximately 4.5 years with a possible five-year extension, Sweco said.
As part of a consortium, Sweco will oversee construction supervision for the project, which aims to double Munich's S-Bahn commuter rail capacity by adding a second line, a new city-center tunnel, and upgrading stations, the company said.
Munich's S-Bahn currently serves over 800,000 daily users, well above its original design for 250,000 passengers, the announcement noted.
Julia Zantke, Business Area President for Sweco in Germany, said, 'Sweco has undertaken several projects for Deutsche Bahn in the past, and we have a strong, long-standing relationship. As a leading European consultancy in the field of transportation, with 6,000 experts in mobility and active travel, we are proud to have been selected to advise Deutsche Bahn on this project, which is of vital importance for Munich and the entire Bavarian region.'
Approximately 60 Sweco experts will be involved daily, the company stated.
Sweco, a European engineering consultancy, had 2024 sales of about 31 billion Swedish Kronor (2.7 billion Euros).
