Skanska secures $274 million contract to rebuild Rourke Bridge in Massachusetts

Swedish construction company Skanska has been awarded a contract by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to design and replace the Rourke Bridge in Lowell, Massachusetts, the company announced Tuesday.

The contract is valued at USD 274 million, approximately SEK 2.8 billion, and Skanska said this amount will be registered in its U.S. order bookings for the second quarter of 2025.

The project's scope includes the complete removal of the existing temporary bridge, which will be replaced with a new permanent bridge structure, according to the company.

Skanska will also undertake roadway reconstruction surrounding the bridge.

Further responsibilities encompass the installation of highway drainage and stormwater management facilities, comprehensive traffic management during construction, and upgrades to existing traffic signals and highway lighting systems.

The project also involves landscaping and utility relocation, along with all other related bridge and highway work, the company stated.

Work on the Rourke Bridge is scheduled to commence in May 2025, with an expected completion date in February 2030.
